Published in The Observer!
I wrote a thing about how moved I was by seeing the Flaming Lips live in concert last year in Kansas City, which moved me literally to Omaha and Oklahoma City a few weeks later to catch them again on the same tour! “My Summer Freakout”was published in the August issue of The Observer, and they also included photos I took: balloons overhead at the Kansas City concert, and the

Chicago or Bust!
The Flaming Lips will be at the Salt Shed on August 16th and so will I. Now the countdown has begun! I’m also looking forward to seeing Modest Mouse too, but the Lips are the reason I’m dropping some Benjamins on a flight and hotel to get my ass to Chi-town for the show. Do You Realize?-What Happened During Filming of the Portlandia Episode?
If you’ve ever watched the Portlandia episode where the Flaming Lips perform at the Pickathon, you may have noticed the groovy blue jacket that Wayne has on. “Utterly Splendiferous and Entirely Transcendental.”
These words were how someone on an Amazon review described the Soft Bulletin LP that was recorded live at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony. They also capture perfectly how I experience the Flaming Lips. Though the band doesn’t need added strings and brass to sound amazing, the symphonic treatment highlights just how good this music is. The wonderful footage of the concert in this video gives us a glimpse
It’s Summertime!
I’m sure you’ll recognize —the magic of this tune that makes it the perfect thing to blast out your car windows on a hot summer day. In this video Wayne explains how the song developed, taking us track by track from what they started out with —-the birds, and “this little organ thing” —-to the elements added later at Dave Fridman’s studio that really gives the music its punch—- the
