Time Travel

When my daughters were little we watched Blue’s Clues with Steven Burns. On long days of watching a toddler and a baby, I found Steve’s presence oddly comforting, even though he was talking to a fake blue dog. I got the feeling he was a creative soul I could relate to. I mean, I can smell the freaks, right?

So when I recently learned that Steven Burns had made music with the Flaming Lips, my favorite band, which was also his favorite band, and collaborated with Steven Drozd, it was like, “I knew it! I knew he was my kind of people.” It’s like—“Yes, the universe makes sense!”

Listening to Steve do the voiceover for the Flaming Lips tune “Time Travel” on the “It overtakes me” EP is sort of like a time travel of my own. I had no idea in the late 1990’s when I was watching Steve cavort on the Blue’s Clues set that my future self —-a self with two grown daughters, not these two little moppets—-would be listening to this guy narrate a song that was as yet unrecorded, by a band I had yet to discover, but would totally overwhelmingly love.
