I would love to be behind the scenes at a Lips concert, to see them staging all their props. Maybe the next best thing is the video series, “Welcome to the Warehouse”, which takes us through the “giant and unorganized Flaming Lips warehouse,” where all kinds of ephemera and crap from their shows is stored. Things like the unicorn Wayne rode through the crowd and the mammoth hands they molded themselves and inserted with a laser. I’m especially fond of the cement mixer they somehow have, which looks like the one my dad had in our back yardwhen I was a kid.
In addition to the trailer above I’m only finding one other video on YouTube, Episode One, Harp Bubble. in which they excavate the bubble they used to encase a harp during some Soft Bulletin performances.
Well I know the band is busy and are touring overseas this year, but I hope we can look forward to more episodes of Zac and Matt digging through the motherlode of inflatable eyeballs, brains and confetti cannons. But maybe they’ve been hit with the same ennui I feel when I’m sorting through my garage. Although the crap in there isn’t nearly as interesting.
