The Lips are all over this Superbowl ad and it’s flaming awesome. Wayne and company materialize in some random family’s breakfast nook, inspiring an “epic playdate.” While the family races off in their Hyundai, the Lips send them off singing “Sun blows up today” while perched precariously on the rooftop. The Lips show up throughout the family’s day, doing a float-by on some bonkers watercraft with flashing colored lights, and rolling the iconic concert bubble across a field to knock down giant bowling pins. My favorite part is the family car pulling alongside the Flaming Lips bus and getting blitzed with confetti. Brings back happy concert memories.
Yes it’s a commercial, for a car, and a Superbowl commercial at that. But good for the Flaming Lips for landing a lucrative gig back in 2013 to fund their more avante-garde pursuits. And a broadcast of the fearless freaks on millions of TVs across the nation during Superbowl Sunday —good for us!
